Athletics
These words were spoken by Eric Liddell, the son of missionary parents an Olympic champion and one of the most celebrated athletes of his generation. He understood the theology of athletics. To use sport as a source of inspiration and provide a sense of peace that you are utilizing the gifts God has given you is an act of worship. At Westside Christian School we believe it is possible for a student to feel God’s presence more profoundly on the soccer field with sweat dripping from his or her forehead than in any church’s beautiful sanctuary. We endeavor to instill in our students that daily life is a spiritual act of worship and every activity as service to Christ. As children train, compete, love their teammates, settle disputes, win and lose graciously they are learning to practice the presence of the Living Lord. For our physical education program, we are so privileged at our school to have world-class sport facilities at our doorstep. The University of British Columbia Aquatic Centre plays host to international swim teams and is the site of our swimming lessons. The Thunderbird Arena and its Olympic ice rink provide us with great skating. Osborne Gym is the site of our gymnastics program where students have full use of trampolines, balance beams, vaults and other equipment under the instruction of University staff. The gymnasium is the basis of our phys-ed program and we have access to the University’s sports equipment. And of course the University Endowment Lands and Pacific Spirit Park have some of the best running and biking trails around. We are an easy walk to Spanish Banks, one of the most beautiful beaches in Vancouver. Our students also participate in the Healthy Living Program as devised by Action B.C. In addition to dance, games and team sports we are committed to incorporating fitness and an active lifestyle as part of our regular day. Our annual Sports Day occurs in June and is, as some of our students would say, “the best day of the year”. Races, relays and ribbons abound, we celebrate and as Eric Liddell would say we “feel His pleasure.” |
